A History of Elcea

About this website

This is the website of the Elcea D&D campaign, which is now in its 25th year. This site is a repository of information, archives, and resources for the Dungeon Master and players of the campaign. It is built and maintained by Phil Pike, the DM and creator of the world of Elcea. For a brief history of the campaign, read on:

In the Beginning...

The Elcea Campaign began in the summer of 1979. I had been introduced to Dungeons and Dragons by two guys in my dormitory at Michigan State University (Kevin Boyd and Dennis Brauning share the blame for sending me down this path), and was quickly hooked.

I soon became fascinated by the possiblity of creating my own world, and by the time I went home that summer I already had the beginnings of Elcea down on paper. My two sisters, Laura and Elizabeth, and one of my friends, Mike Shackleton, were dragooned into rolling up characters, and we were off. Not long after I returned to MSU (followed by Laura and Mike) the campaign had 14 players.

Over the years the campaign has grown, changed, and improved. It relocated from Michigan to California (followed by several of the players), and many years later to Oregon, where it is now conducted online via Netmeeting for the players in California. There is also a new group here in Corvallis continuing the face-to-face tradition. For 22 years over 40 players and hundreds of characters have adventured in the world known as Elcea.

Some of the players have been with the campaign now for almost 20 years. I have had children (now high-schoolers who of course play), and the campaign itself is responsible for four marraiges, many enduring friendships, and lots of laughter, fun, and excitement.

For those who play or have played in the campaign, enjoy these resources - you helped to create and shape them. For the casual visitor, feel free to look around. Elcea is quite a place, and you never know just who - or what - you'll meet!
